There are several factors in which influence the smile. It is generally accepted that the lip line in combination with the gingival display/tooth position are the most important factors. Some patients can display large areas of gums when they smile (photo). This can be corrected with proper diagnosis and treatment planning.

Do you look older that you really are?

Gum recession can be a factor associated with aging. Gum recession happens when the gum “retracts”, displaying the roots. The initial diagnosis can be performed in the mirror. If you notice one or several teeth longer than they should be, you may have gum recession (photo).

Tooth loss can cause an indentation in the gums and jawbone where the tooth used to be. These indentations can cause foot retention in the area. Further, some indentations can cause lip collapse. These cases are extremely delicate to treat because they can be associated with several different etiologies. Only the correct diosmosis can assure clinical success.

topo ▲Instructions after your surgery.

Right after your periodontal or implant surgery

  • Proper rest is important.
  • Avoid exercise. You may follow your regular daily activities if they do not require intense exercise.
  • Applying ice packs to the area is very important for the first day. Apply to face 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off. Eating ice cream (without sucking through a straw) is also a good way to apply cold to the surgical area.
  • Do not eat or drink for two hours after surgery.
  • Place a towel on your pillow. A small amount of bleeding during the first 2 days after surgery is normal.

Take the medications as prescribed. Follow the instructions for all medications accurately.

topo ▲Diet for the first week after the periodontal or implant surgery.

It is very important that you maintain a proper and balanced diet.

Drink plenty of fluids for the first 48 hours. However, you should avoid eating the following:

  • Hard and/or sticky foods
  • Hot foods in the first 48 hours (the heat may increase the inflammation)
  • Spicy foods
  • Nuts, chips, popcorn, etc.
  • Avoid eating through a straw (sucking may start bleeding)

topo ▲Oral Hygiene.

  • Only brush the parts of your mouth where surgery was not performed.
  • Rinse your mouth carefully after eating.
  • You may receive a prescription for an oral rinse to be used on the surgical area. Follow instructions for this medication accurately.

topo ▲Questions about discomfort, swelling, bleeding and infection after the periodontal or implant surgery

Discomfort: You may experience discomfort several days after surgery. Usually the pain is more intense during the first 12 to 24 hours. In the event you have pain and the medicine prescribed for you does not give you relief, please contact Dr. Gapski.

Swelling: It is most commonly seen during the first 48 to 72 hours after surgery. Ice packs or cold on the first day of the surgery helps to avoid/reduce the swelling. If the swelling is intense and/or does not subside or improve after 72 hours, call Dr. Gapski.

Infection: In general, infections are rare in periodontal and implant surgery. They usually can only be seen several days after surgery. If you experience intense and/or increasing swelling after 72 hours or a fever, please call Dr. Gapski.

Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding commonly occurs during the first 2 days after surgery. Avoid eating through a straw (sucking may start bleeding). Place a towel on your pillow for the first 2 days. If bleeding starts and continues for several minutes, apply wet gauze or a tea bag for 10 minutes. If bleeding persists, please contact Dr. Gapski.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or teeth. This method of treatment is considered the most adequate to replace a missing tooth, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.

Advantages of Dental Implants:

  • They look like natural teeth (photo)
  • They do not need to grind neighboring teeth to replace the missing tooth
  • Prevent gum and jawbone resorption (very common in removable prosthesis and bridges)
  • Chewing capacity very similar to the natural dentition
  • Long-term therapy. Dental Implants are the most successful method of therapy in dentistry today.
  • Can replace single or multiple missing teeth
  • The patient does not need to wear a removable prosthesis

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

Today, virtually any patient is a candidate to receive dental implants, even smokers. However, some characteristics displayed below are ideal for patients who need dental implants:

  • Good overall health
  • Sufficient quantity and quality of jaw bone. The used of bone grafting may be necessary if you don’t have enough bone volume to receive a dental implant.
  • Patient free of active gum disease
  • Non-smokers

Patient who do not meet these characteristics can receive dental implant with high success rate. However, they may need supplementary therapy to ensure clinical success. All co-factors should be evaluated to indicate the proper treatment.

Teeth in the same day – Are you a candidate?

Usually, it is necessary to wait a healing period of approximately 3 to 6 months to connect a crown over the top of a dental implant. In such cases, the patients need to wear a removable prosthesis until the final healing is completed.  However, the GTiii offers a technique in which the patient can walk-out of the surgery with fixed teeth. These cases are very delicate and all co-factors should be evaluated to indicate if you are a candidate of such therapy.

Flapless technique (implant without incisions, suture and minimal discomfort)

In several cases, the implant involves extensive incisions, reflection of flaps and sutures. In such cases, the probability of complications and discomfort increases. However, GTiii offers a revolutionary method of therapy in which the implant can be placed without incisions or sutures. These cases can be performed with or without computer guided assistance, depending on the case. These cases are very delicate and all co-factors should be evaluated to indicate if you are a candidate of such therapy.

What can you expect after receiving a dental implant?

Dental implants are very similar to natural teeth; therefore, they require similar home care. Proper brushing and flossing are needed to ensure proper maintenance of you dental implant. Further, regular professional check-ups are very important.
